Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? offered viewers a nail-biting instalment tonight (May 12), as a contestant came within inches of becoming the show's latest millionaire.

Scottish retired doctor Andrew Townsley breezed his way through the early questions, not using any lifelines until the £125,000 question when he played his 50/50.

Amazingly, by the time he reached the 15th and final question – via a nerve-wracking moment where he asked host Jeremy Clarkson for an answer using his Ask the Host lifeline – he still had his Phone A Friend lifeline left.

Clarkson was very excited about Andrew's achievement, saying: "This is it, the £1 million question. You'd be the sixth person ever to do it in all the years this show has been on. There can't be that many, I don't know how many... who even got to half a million."

That big question saw Andrew asked to decide which iconic motor sport race was held first – Le Mans 24 Hours, Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 or Isle of Man TT.

An unsure Andrew opted to call his friend Ailsa to see if she could help, but sadly she had no idea and said she would only be guessing.

Andrew decided to be sensible and end his game there, opting not to lose his money and secure his £500,000 prize.

To make things even more agonising, he said that if he'd had to guess he would have picked Isle of Man TT as his answer – and Clarkson revealed that if he'd gone for it, "there'd be tinsel landing on your head right now" as it was the correct answer.

Viewers were on the edge of their seats waiting to find out whether Andrew could become the show's sixth ever millionaire – and were very disappointed when it didn't happen:
