In the midst of the global pandemic, fashion designers have taken the time (of which there was plenty during months in lockdown) to reckon how they operate in excess. For too long, the industry at large has been churning out collection after collection, accruing ample amounts of surplus fabric and other materials in the process. Now, Jonny Johansson is doing something about it. The creative director of Acne Studios has announced that his team will continuously drop capsule collections that repurpose deadstock fabrics.

Since founding the Swedish label in 1996, Johansson has produced pieces that play with volume and texture, always pushing fashion forward. His fall 2020 collection, for example, showcased rust-colored jackets with mutton sleeves over slim-fit velvet trousers with tassels at the hems. And he plans on bringing the same inventiveness to these new collections.

“This new series is about finding creative ways to be more resourceful,” Johansson said, “Acne Studios was founded on design experimentation, and today we want to use our creativity to take positive steps towards becoming more mindful.”

For the first drop, which launches today on the brand’s website, Johansson is offering six styles that focus on patchwork. He’s combined wool panels in tan and black with check and houndstooth prints on jackets with pronounced zippers on the hems and side pockets; followed the same interplay, but in cotton, on a miniskirt and trousers; and attached viscose sleeves in black and burgundy to a white button-down. There is also a white cotton tee that has the word repurposed made of tweed and wool houndstooth scraps applied to the front.

Johansson intends to offer the same reconstructed vibe to subsequent collections in the new category, but have each relay a distinct point of view. Indeed, the goal is to find creative design solutions with what is at hand, to give new life to the leftovers.
