Volunteers deliver food to elderly in Milan heatwave

STORY: ‘City Angels’ travel around Milan in a van with boxes of food and medicine.

The service exists all year round but has been ramped up by the city’s ‘Heat Plan’ that aims to prevent vulnerable people from leaving their homes in high temperatures and risk getting sick.

City Angels volunteer Domenico Giuliani said there had been an increase in requests for help because the elderly often don’t have air conditioning and fans provide little respite.

On Friday, temperatures were expected to reach 100.4 Fahrenheit and continue into Saturday. Italy is currently experiencing its worst drought in 70 years. It is expected to rain in Milan on Sunday.
