Volocopter air taxi may fly from Marina South to MBS, Tanjong Rhu from 2024
SINGAPORE — Come 2024, residents and tourists in Singapore may be able to ride in an air taxi from Marina South to Marina Bay Sands, the Marina Bay Financial Centre and Tanjong Rhu and back if the authorities give the green light for the route.
German operator Volocopter plans to run the air taxi service over a distance of about 12km for 15 minutes at an altitude of up to 150m.
In addition to its landing area at Marina South, Volocopter plans to build more "Voloports" at Changi Airport, Seletar Aerospace Park and Sentosa in Singapore, and in Johor Bahru and Batam.
The announcement comes three years after Volocopter made a demonstration flight of the air taxi in Marina Bay in 2019.
On Tuesday (12 July), Volocopter launched an exhibition to showcase its air taxi model in Asia in partnership with the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).
Located at the ITE College Central, the exhibition features a 3D Voloport scale model and information on the urban air mobility (UAM) industry and Volocopter while visitors will also have the chance to sit in the air taxi.
According to Volocopter, its UAM services could generate about S$4.18 billion in cumulative economic benefits and create up to 1,300 jobs in Singapore by 2030.
Speaking at the launch of the exhibition, Volocopter Chief Commercial Officer Christian Bauer said, “This is the perfect time to showcase our VoloCity in Singapore, as our latest local market survey showed a significant uptick in the proportion of respondents who are excited to try an air taxi service. We hope to increase public awareness and education on this new form of mobility and the many ways it will benefit Singapore.”
Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong, who was also at the launch, said Singapore welcomes innovative companies like Volocopter to build new industries here and an advanced air mobility ecosystem here.
