Volcanic Eruption Strengthens on La Palma

The ongoing Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption intensified on Wednesday, October 27, spewing lava fountains above the Spanish island of La Palma.

The Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan) reported the eruption strengthened on Wednesday night, following another cone collapse earlier in the day. Video released by Involcan shows lava exploding from the volcano.

The EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service said the lava flow had covered over 908 hectares (2,244 acres) as of October 26. Credit: INVOLCAN via Storyful
