The Voice Recap: Season 24’s Battles Claim Their First Casualties

Tuesday’s episode of The Voice sent Gwen Stefani, John Legend, Niall Horan and Reba McEntire marching into battle… well, into the Battles. But only four of their six contestants who waged musical warfare made it through to the Knockouts? Which ones? And were they the right ones? Read on. We’ll discuss.

Team Legend: DeeJay Young (Grade: B) defeated Ephraim Owens (Grade: B+) on “Cry Me a River” | In the face-off between the EGOT winner’s “perfect tenors,” I expected Hamilton vet Young to mop the floor with Owens, whose Blind hadn’t exactly left me seeing stars. But, though Young was good — charismatic and polished — Owens, with his richer voice and more natural swagger, was better. John disagreed.

Team Reba: Jordan Rainer (Grade: B+) defeated Jackson Snelling (Grade: B) on “The Heart Won’t Lie” | Jordan, who described herself as “country as cornbread,” and Jackson, whom she described as “country as crawfish,” meshed beautifully on Reba’s Vince Gill duet. But the Jordan definitely had the edge; as much as I may have liked every note Jackson sang, I believed every note that she sang.

Team Niall: Lennon  Vanderdoes (Grade: B) defeated Tanner Massey (Grade: A) on “She’s Always a Woman” — Tanner stolen by Gwen | To my ears, the selection of Billy Joel’s classic did in Lennon; it was too straightforward a pop ballad to work right with his unusual voice. Tanner, meanwhile, was delivered a shock in the form of a powerful, nuanced performance that made me regret ever having written him off as “just great boy-band hair.” And that stage presence — damn! Alas, once again, the coach disagreed.

So, whose Battle performance really knocked you out? Vote in the poll below, then back up your vote in the comments.
