Virginia's Dontayvion Wicks makes an incredible TD catch vs. Miami that you have to see to believe

We can end the 2021 catch of the year competition. Dontayvion Wicks has won it.

Wicks somehow came up with a touchdown with 5:50 to go in the third quarter of Virginia's 30-28 win over Miami on Thursday night after a potential interception was dropped by Miami cornerback Marcus Clarke. After the ball went through Clark's hands it never hit the ground.

Just watch this play. It's incredible.

Credit to the official who was closest to the play as it happened in real time. He realized right away that the ball never hit the ground and immediately signaled for a touchdown. The call on the field seemed incredulous at first. The ball had to hit the ground, right? Replays like the one above made it clear that it never came close to hitting the ground before Wicks reached up with his right hand to grab it.

If anyone is able to top Wicks' catch for the best of the season it will be a thoroughly deserved title and — somehow — an even better grab. It's doubtful that can happen.

Virginia holds on for the win

Miami positioned itself for a game-winning field goal as time expired. That kick was no good.

Andres Borregales hit the left upright from 33 yards out after Miami played for the game-winning kick on its final drive. The Hurricanes elected to center the ball and not attempt to go to the end zone from the Virginia 14 with 1:37 to go and the decision backfired as loudly as Borregales' kick slammed off the upright.

Miami trailed 16-7 at halftime and scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to pull within two. Oh, and the Hurricanes had the ball for the final 5:29 of the game. But that didn't materialize into a win as Miami fell to 2-3.

Tyler Van Dyke started at QB for the Hurricanes for the second straight game as D'Eriq King missed the game because of a shoulder injury. Van Dyke scored a rushing TD with 9:09 to go to pull Miami within two but the Hurricanes never scored again.

Miami's best shot at the ACC is disappearing

This could have been the year for Miami in the ACC with Clemson struggling and no other stellar teams in the conference. Instead, Miami has to run the table to finish with nine wins after losing to Alabama, Michigan State and now Virginia in the first five games of the season.

Only one of those games is a conference game, so Miami still has a chance in a wide-open ACC Coastal. But if the Hurricanes can't take care of Virginia at home, do you have faith that Miami can win the division?
