Police are investigating after four men were stabbed in London in the space of a few minutes as August got off to a bloody start.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning in the High Holborn area of central London, when officers were called following reports of a mass brawl involving men with knives.

The Metropolitan Police were alerted by the London Ambulance Service at about 3.15am when two men, aged 27 and 24, turned up at hospital with stab wounds.

The older of the two was described as being in a life threatening condition, while the other victim did not suffer serious injuries and was later discharged.

A short time later officers in the Clerkenwell area noticed a car parked at the side of the road with its hazard warning lights on.

When officers approached the vehicle they discovered two men inside both suffering from stab wounds.

Officers gave first aid to the men, who were both aged 25, before paramedics arrived.

One of the men remained in a critical condition in hospital, while the other was discharged and arrested on suspicion of GBH.

Detectives believe the four stabbings were all linked and followed a fight that broke out in the High Holborn area.

Another man was rushed to hospital in North London after he was stabbed while in a grocery store.

The incidents marked a bloody start to August coming just hours after five men were shot in three separate gun attacks across the capital.

On Friday evening armed police responded to reports of machine gun fire in the Agnell Town estate area and a  short time later two men turned up at a south London hospital with gunshot wounds.

In Hackney, east London, two men were taken to hospital with stab and gunshot wounds following a fight and there was also a shooting in the West Croydon area in the early hours of Saturday morning.

July was the bloodiest month of 2020 so far with 15 murders recorded across the capital and numerous gun and knife attacks.

Scotland Yard has warned that demand on policing in the capital is reaching pre-Covid levels.
