Vin Diesel reveals why 'Fast & Furious' franchise is coming to an end after 11 films

Vin Diesel has confirmed that the Fast & Furious franchise will come to an end with its 11th movie because "all good things should" come to a conclusion.

It had previously been announced that there will be two more films in the series after this year's Fast & Furious 9, likely to arrive in 2023 and 2024.

Promoting the new movie, Diesel told Associated Press that "every story deserves its own ending" and the time has come to say goodbye to his character, Dominic Toretto, and the rest of his crew.

He said: "I know people are going to feel like it doesn’t have to end, but I think all good things should.

"There are reasons for a finale. I think this franchise has deserved it."

Justin Lin, who is returning to the director's chair for Fast & Furious 9 — simply called F9 in the States — after sitting out the last two entries, said this film serves as "kind of the first film of the final chapter".

He revealed that Diesel approached him with the idea of winding down the franchise, suggesting an arc to bring everything to a satisfying conclusion.

Lin added: "We’re kind of reconfiguring everything, so that the next two movies should wrap up this amazing journey for these characters."

The Fast & Furious franchise began in 2001 as a crime thriller about street racing, but has since transformed into an enormous blockbuster phenomenon.

The last two movies in the series have each earned more than $1bn (£709m) at the global box office, with Fast & Furious 9 expected to be one of the biggest hits of this summer.

Diesel reflected on the incredible growth of the series, from those low-budget roots through to what it has become today.

"This franchise was born from the pavement, from the concrete," said the 53-year-old actor.

"The world just championed this underdog to a place where it has already surpassed all of these other franchises. But the franchise has a soul, and that soul has to rest."

The new movie introduces John Cena to the franchise, portraying Jakob — Dom's younger brother, who is working with the crew's former foe Cipher (Charlize Theron).

Fast & Furious 9 is due to be released in UK cinemas on 24 June and in US cinemas from 25 June.
