‘Despicable Me 4’ has five new characters: Poppy, Perry and Patsy Prescott, Maxime Le Mal and Valentina

Despicable Me 4 is coming with a vengeance, and with a bevy of new characters, including Poppy Prescott, voiced by Joey King.

After 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, took fans back to Gru's origin story, Despicable Me 4 is set once again in the present. Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) has left his evil aspirations behind and is working for the Anti-Villain League. He’s married to Lucy (voiced by Kristen Wiig); in addition to parenting his daughters Margo, Edith and Agnes, the couple have a new baby, Gru Jr.

But their happy lives hunting villains are about to be disrupted in the new film out July 3. Gru’s nemesis, Maxime Le Mal (voiced by franchise newcomer Will Ferrell), has escaped from prison and is out to get revenge on the reformed bad guy for putting him in jail in the first place.

To keep Gru and his family safe, the Anti-Villain League hides them away, giving everyone new identities. But no sooner is the family safe and sound in their new lives than a neighbor figures out Gru’s true identity, and blackmails him into joining her in a heist — with Minions, of course.

Ferrell joined the cast as Le Mal, while Sofía Vergara came on board as the convict's girlfriend and crime-planning partner. Rounding out the new cast is Stephen Colbert as Poppy's father, Perry Prescott, and Chloe Fineman as her mom, Patsy Prescott.

Who is the new girl in Despicable Me 4?

When Gru and his family head to their safehouse, complete with new identities, they think they’re totally undercover. As viewers might suspect, it doesn’t last long. Their new neighbors are Perry and Patsy Prescott, and their teenage daughter Poppy Prescott.

And it just so happens that Poppy is a big fan of Gru’s, and is an aspiring villain herself. She uses her dastardly inclinations to involve Gru, Gru Jr. and some Minions in a heist, to steal the mascot of Lycée Pas Bon, Gru's alma mater, where Poppy herself hopes to one day become a supervillain.

But there’s a catch, of course. When they nab the mascot, they don’t realize it has a tracker in its collar — and the person who’s tracking them is none other than Le Mal.

When a Despicable Me 4 teaser dropped in January, King posted it on her Instagram. “Say hello to Poppy,” she captioned the video. “You do not wanna get on her bad side…she can be pretty…Despicable."

Who are Gru's new nemeses in Despicable Me 4?

At the beginning of the movie, Gru is back at his alma mater, Lycée Pas Bon, where fellow alumnus Le Mal is receiving an award. Little does the villain know that Gru is really undercover, and the ceremony is actually a sting operation to put him in jail. Le Mal manages to escape from prison, and sets out for revenge with his girlfriend, Valentina.

The movie is a bit of a Saturday Night Live reunion. Longtime former cast members Ferrell, Wiig and current star Fineman are all in the Despicable Me 4 cast, as is original SNL player Laraine Newman. Both Carrell and Colbert have been featured on the sketch show as well.

At the Despicable Me 4 premiere in New York on June 9, 2024, Ferrell appeared on the red carpet with wife Viveca Paulin, mother Betty Kay Overman and sons Magnus and Axel. Ferrell, Carrell and Wiig all posed together — while King made a big splash with a pack of dogs dressed as Minions.

What happens to the Minions in Despicable Me 4?

When Gru and his family have to flee their home, most of the Minions can’t come with them. Instead, they head to the Anti-Villain League headquarters, where they learn some new, extremely Minion-y tricks.

Some of the yellow pranksters even receive superpowers, and become Mega-Minions. Although the trailer leaves the special minions' future up in the air, these tiny superheroes could play a pivotal role in Despicable Me 4.
