Woman Praises 'Can I Help You Mate' Aussie Spirit as Family Home Spared by Fire

After being “incredibly fortunate” to have her property spared by an out-of-control fire, New South Wales woman Edwina Robertson has praised the “can I help you mate” attitude everyone showed during the ordeal.

Robertson, a photographer living in Warrington Vale, said a nearby fire jumped a containment line, and that her property was only spared by a weakening wind. As the state battled catastrophic fires, she pointed to a positive in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“Yesterday and the days leading up, I have witnessed mateship, care, resilience and extreme support. From neighbours, friends, clients and even total strangers,” she wrote. “This camaraderie, this ‘can I help you mate’ attitude is what Australia was built on and what it is renowned for around the world. This is what it truly means to be Australian.”

By November 13, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service said the Gulf Road Fire, which was burning near Warrington Vale, had burned over 155 acres but was under control.
