Wildfires Scorch Thousands of Acres in North Texas

A wildfire that broke out in Hardeman County, Texas, on August 16 had burned more than 7,200 acres by Friday, August 23, and was 84 percent contained, the Texas A & M Forest Service said.

At the time of writing, the forest service said no injuries had been reported and no homes had been lost as a result of the Copper Breaks Fire, located about six miles south of Quanah along Highway 6.

This footage shows the fire on Thursday, August 22, burning close to cattle, as thick smoke obscures blue skies.

Firefighters were also working to contain the Vivian Fire, burning west of Crowell, about 15 miles southwest of the Copper Breaks Fire. Officials said the Vivian Fire, which started on Tuesday, August 20, had spread across more than 8,800 acres by Friday afternoon and was just 9 percent contained. Aircraft were being used to drop retardant on the fire, Texas A & M Forest Service said. Credit: Texas A & M Forest Service via Storyful
