Waves Smash Against Key West Shore as Storms Batter Gulf Coast

Strong winds and rain from tropical storms Marco and Laura battered the Gulf Coast shoreline on August 24, with large waves pounding the Key West coast.

The National Weather Service in Key West reported “significant” offshore wave heights and hazardous seas in the afternoon. Tropical Storm Laura, which led to more than 20 reported deaths in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, was traveling over Cuba, several hundred miles to the south.

In this video, filmed in Key West, waves can be seen smashing against the coastline near a beach resort.

The NWS said strong, damaging wind gusts and “possible isolated tornadoes” could be expected in the Florida Keys as the storm tracked towards Louisiana, following in the path of Tropical Storm Marco, which had weakened as it made landfall. Credit: Raymond Warren via Storyful
