Virginia Church Partially Collapses as Storm Isaias Batters Area

Tropical storm Isaias brought strong winds to Norfolk, Virginia, on August 4, causing extensive damage to a church in the Lambert’s Point area.

Justin Michael Buchinsky recorded video footage of the collapsed wall of First Baptist Church. The damaged part of the church was built in 1893, according to local reports.

A resident told local media that he was woken up by “what sounded like a bomb” between 4 and 6 am. Local authorities confirmed that they received their first call about the church around 7 am.

The portion of the church that was damaged used to house the old choir loft, and was recently used as a theater and basketball court.

Part of the debris fell onto a gas meter and caused a leak, which was handled by Virginia Natural Gas. No injuries were reported. Credit: Justin Michael Buchinsky via Storyful
