Before and After Video Shows French Mountain Idyll Destroyed by Storm

Video taken before and after Storm Alex hit the French Alpine village of Breil-sur-Roya shows the devastating impact of the deluge.

A wide meander of the Roya river, surrounding by steep mountains, gave the village its idyllic setting. Video shot on October 6 shows the piles of rubble and mud left behind after torrential rain swelled the river.

Breil-sur-Roya was one of the places worst-hit by the deadly storm, with several buildings destroyed and dozens of vehicles buried in mud.

Five deaths in areas north of Nice had been confirmed by October 7, Nice Matin said, while searches were still underway for up to 21 people still missing.

Seb Hecquet, who recorded both the videos here, said he was visiting family in the village and felt he was hallucinating due to the changes. He said the village had “lost its soul.” Credit: @SebHecquet via Storyful
