Tropical Cyclone Jasper Churns Over Coral Sea East of Queensland

Tropical Cyclone Jasper started to weaken as it churned over the Coral Sea east of Queensland overnight into December 9, but remained a Category 4 storm, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said.

The bureau said the storm was expected to move west by Sunday and was likely to make landfall on the northern coast of Queensland — between Cape Melville and Townsville — by Wednesday, December 13, and had the “potential to re-intensify.”

The bureau said gusts near the center were estimated to be 270 km/h (168 mph). Credit: CSU/CIRA & JMA/JAXA via Storyful
