Sydney Pharmacy Sells Out of Face Masks and Hand Sanitiser as Coronavirus Fears Grow

Shelves normally housing face masks and hand sanitiser were left empty at a Chemist Warehouse outlet in Chatswood on January 29 after people rushed to buy supplies in the wake of the deadly coronavirus.

The chemist chain placed signs throughout the store and in the shop window stating that surgical masks were out of stock and hand sanitiser had sold out.

Coronavirus fears caused a spike in the purchase of the items as shoppers attempt to protect themselves against the virus.

The outbreak had so far claimed more than 120 lives and infected over 4,000 people in China on January 29. Five cases had been confirmed in Australia.

On the Wednesday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the government would evacuate Australians who are trapped in China’s Hubei province as a result of the virus outbreak and take them to Christmas Island for quarantine. Credit: Julie Lee via Storyful
