SUV Drags Bikes Along as It Speeds Away From Protesters in New York

The driver of a black SUV that was seen driving over bicycles in Manhattan on July 7 after being stopped by protesters was released without charge, police in New York told local press.

Witness video showed the vehicle as it sped away from protesters who had stopped it near Bryant Park.

Separate video shows the SUV stopped in the street and surrounded by protesters. One of them is heard saying “pop his tires”, before a hissing sound is heard.

At this point in the video, the driver takes off, dragging along bikes that were in front of the vehicle. A photo of the police stopping the vehicle shows it has a flat rear tire and a bike underneath.

Mercedes Mendez recorded the video featured here, which shows the SUV driving off.

Mendez said on Instagram that the driver was irritated when asked to stop by protesters clearing a route for marchers towards Bryant Park.

“If it wasn’t for our bikers and organizers at the frontline advocating for our rights, protecting us and alerting us from up ahead to move out of the way just in time there would have been human [casualties],” Mendez said on Instagram.

Mendez said two people were left with minor injuries after the incident. The Wall Street Journal and New York Post said no injuries had been reported. Credit: Mercedes Mendez via Storyful
