Suspected Drug-Trafficking Airplane Seen in Flames After Landing on Mexican Highway

A suspected narco plane landed on a highway and went on fire in northern Mexico on Sunday, July 5, after the military said it was intercepted over Mexican airspace

This video was shot in a vehicle traveling in the area where the incident occurred, near Polyuc, in Quintana Roo. A helicopter can be seen in the opening seconds, before the vehicle approaches the burning plane.

Several reports said the helicopter fired on the airplane and its occupants, but the video does not show this. The occupants of the plane fled in a truck, which was pursued and found abandoned, the Mexican ministry of defense said.

Some reports said the plane’s occupants set fire to it before fleeing in the truck, but this was not officially confirmed.

More than 200 kilos of “a white substance similar to cocaine” was found in and around the truck, the ministry said.

Antonio Carlos Hernandez, who posted this video, told Storyful he was driving on the highway from the town of Jose Maria Morelos when he realized a helicopter was flying low in the distance and saw there were military personnel on the road. Credit: Antonio Carlos Hernandez via Storyful
