Survivors Rescued After Deadly Earthquake Hits Turkey

Search and rescue teams carried people from the rubble in Elazig on Saturday, January 25, after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey a day earlier.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said in a statement that it had sent 1,100 rescuers to the city. They warned locals to leave roads clear to allow emergency vehicles to travel freely.

At least 22 were killed in the earthquake, which struck on January 24, Turkish media reported. More than 1,000 were injured.

The earthquake occurred near the border between Turkey’s Malatya and Elazig provinces, affecting the city of Elazig and many small towns nearby, reports said.

Soon after the initial quake, the province was shaken further by a series of aftershocks reportedly ranging from magnitude 5.4 to 3.3. The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said at least 228 aftershocks had been logged. Credit: @AFADBaskanlik via Storyful
