South Shields Man Convicted of Attempted Murder After Slitting Girlfriend's Throat

A man was sentenced to more than 13 years in jail on Wednesday, July 15, after slitting his girlfriend’s throat and “leaving her to die” in South Shields, England, months earlier.

Police said 53-year-old Karl Molyneaux pleaded guilty to attempted murder at his court appearance on April 30. He was sentenced to jail for 13-and-a-half years on Wednesday, following the attack that happened on March 11.

The Northumbria Police released this footage and audio that shows Molyneaux walking around a gas station as he speaks with an emergency telephone operator and confesses to the crime.

When the operator asked Molyneaux what happened, he said he “just snapped” after an argument with his partner. At the end of the video, Molyneaux calmly surrenders to police and is arrested.

Police said Molyneaux stabbed his girlfriend multiple times before fleeing. The victim was taken to the hospital for “life-saving surgery” after her two teenage children, who were upstairs during the attack, found her.

Molyneaux had known the victim for more than 10 years before they started dating, according to the Northumbria Police.

“This was an absolutely appalling attack as Molyneaux, a man with no previous offending history, attempted to kill someone who he should have been caring for," Detective Sgt Gaye Martin said in the Northumbria Police statement. Credit: Northumbria Police via Storyful
