South American Bird Recreates Sound Effects Years After Being Rescued

A jaybird in Campina Grande do Sul, Brazil, has an amazing ability to both remember and recreate a range of electrical sounds and dialogue, even after years of living away from any such input at the Criadouro Onca Pintada rescue center.

Video shared by Goska Zdziechowska in mid-November of last year shows a curl-crested jay mimicking Star Wars–like snippets of dialogue and electronic sounds within its enclosure.

Zdziechowska wrote in the YouTube caption that she returned to the rescue center after five years, and the jay still “proudly repeated his repertoire.”

She told Storyful, “The bird was rescued and brought to the Criadouro Onca Pintada. And it is not normal for this bird to make noises like that.”

Zdziechowska added, “It seems to me like a computer game. But I don’t know if the bird was trained or learned itself just from hearing.” Credit: Goska Zdziechowska via Storyful
