Security Forces Face Off With Protesters in Minsk After Presidential Vote

Security forces clashed with opposition protesters in Minsk, Belarus, on August 9 after incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko was tipped to win his sixth term as the nation’s leader.

Exit polls had Lukashenko placed to win Sunday’s presidential poll with around 80 percent of the vote in an election that opposition candidates claimed was rigged, according to reports.

Thousands of people reportedly took to the streets following the poll despite a warning from Lukashenko that demonstrations would be met with force.
