Scores Killed or Injured After Explosion at Fuel Pipeline Leak

Hidalgo governor Omar Fayad monitored an intense blaze at a fuel line on January 18 in Tlahuelilpan, Mexico.

On Friday night at about 5 pm, a group of people collecting fuel from a gas line were hurt when an explosion occurred. Veronica Monroy, a local journalist, had been on the scene earlier as people flocked to collect the fuel from a leak in the Pemex line.

Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) blamed the explosion on the “theft” of fuel.

According to local media, 20 people were killed and 60 others were injured but the numbers were likely to climb.

Fayad took to the skies to monitor the full extent of the fire and tweeted “We are applying all the necessary measures to serve the population of the area.” Credit: Omar Fayad
