Sakurajima Volcano in Japan Emits Plumes of Ash Cloud

Sakurajima, Japan’s most active volcano, twice blew off plumes of steam accompanied by a volcanic explosion early on Sunday, December 16.

The blasts took place on Sakurajima’s southern peak, Minami-dake, the only active one out of the the volcano’s three peaks.

The Japan Meteorological Agency’s camera caught the first eruption just before 4 am Sunday, and the second event about 30 minutes later.
