Protesters March in Santiago Against Income Inequality

Protesters marched in Santiago, Chile, on Monday, October 21, during continued civil unrest in response to income inequality.

At least 11 people were reported to have died in the protests, five reportedly after a factory was burned by looters on Sunday. A state of emergency was declared on Friday, reports said.

Videos filmed in Santiago on Monday show a group of protesters marching and banging pots and other objects in the city center. The ‘cacerolazo,’ or casserole, is a traditional form of protest in Chile and other South American countries wherein people show solidarity with a cause by making noise with household items.

The protests began in response to a proposed hike in metro fares but have since expanded to encompass general anger about the cost of living and inequality in the country, according to reports. Credit: Pepe Díaz via Storyful
