Perth Zoo Orangutan Gets Police Escort for His Trip to Eye Specialists

Perth Zoo’s resident male Sumatran orangutan Dinar was given a police escort as he left the zoo for the first time in 17 years to get an eye check.

Dinar was treated to the escort to minimize the amount of time he was under anesthetic. It was the first time he’d left the zoo since arriving from Toronto in 2004.

Dinar was brought to a local veterinary center after staff became concerned about his right eye, which showed signs of inflammation and discoloration. After a check by a vet and an ophthalmologist who usually treats humans, glaucoma was ruled out.

The zoo said Dinar “recovered well” and was now back in his jungle-themed home. Credit: Perth Zoo via Storyful
