Opposition Lawmaker Throws Rotten Plants at LegCo President During National Anthem Debate

A pro-democracy lawmaker was removed from Hong Kong’s Legislative Council on May 28 after attempting to hurl a bag of rotten plants at the Legco’s president.

This footage shows the Democratic Party’s Ted Hui running towards Legco head Andrew Leung during Thursday’s debate on the controversial National Anthem Bill.

Lawmakers began debating the bill – which would criminalize insults of the national anthem – on Wednesday, when protests broke out across the Beijing-ruled city.

Emergency services were reportedly called to the chamber after Thursday’s disruption, and pro-establishment lawmaker Chan Hoi-yan was taken to hospital complaining that the smell had made her feel ill.
