Officials Lower Flags to Mourn 11,000 Italians Killed by Coronavirus

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte ordered that all flags at public locations be lowered to half-mast on Tuesday, March 31, to mourn the thousands who’d died in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The collective gesture of condolence was organized by an association of Italian mayors, according to local media. A minute of silence was observed at noon by public service officers across the country. This video shows local police in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna observing the national moment of silence as Preghiera del Bersagliere plays.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Italy had reported 101,739 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 11,591 deaths. Credit: Polizia Locale Valnure Valchero via Storyful
