Minneapolis Police Abandon 3rd Precinct Building As it Comes Under Assault by Rioters

Minneapolis Police were ordered to evacuate the 3rd Precinct building in downtown Minneapolis late on Thursday, May 28, as rioters attacked the building.

Mayor Jacob Frey told reporters he had made the decision to evacuate the building. “The symbolism of a building cannot outweigh the importance of life, of our officers or the public,” he said. "Brick and mortar is not as important as life.”

Early on Friday, the City of Minneapolis tweeted, “We’re hearing unconfirmed reports that gas lines to the Third Precinct have been cut and other explosive materials are in the building.” This was not confirmed, but the building was later set ablaze.
