Madrid Opera Abandoned as Patrons Protest Lack of Social Distancing

Madrid’s famous Teatro Real opera house was forced to abandon a performance on September 20, after audience members staged a protest over a lack of social distancing measures at the venue.

Reports said a performance of Verdi’s A Masked Ball was abandoned when patrons in the cheaper seats began voicing their displeasure at lack of spacing in their sections.

This footage, posted to Twitter, shows attendees clapping in their seats as the curtain remains down.

El Pais reported that the lobby was “overwhelmed” with patrons and police were called to control the situation.

The Teatro Real said capacity was at 51.5 percent, with 905 seats occupied. Credit: @Xavigustems via Storyful
