Ice Pancakes Float on Lake Superior as Temperatures Dip

Ice pancakes sloshed against each other on Lake Superior in Ashland, Wisconsin, on November 28, as temperatures plummeted to zero degrees Fahrenheit overnight.

Video filmed by Cheryl Koval shows discs of ice resembling pancakes floating on the surface of the lake, next to a frosty pier.

Ice pancakes form in cold conditions on big bodies of water, when strong waves do not allow the surface to freeze into a singular sheet of ice. Separate pancake-shaped discs form as waves drive them to bump into each other. Credit: Cheryl Koval via Storyful
