Hungry? Hippo Pays a Late-Night Visit to South African Gas Station

A hippo stopped by a gas station in St Lucia, South Africa, during its evening stroll on Sunday, February 23.

Marie Stubbe was stopped across the street when the hippo wandered into the forecourt of an Engen gas station.

St Lucia lies at the edge of the vast iSimangaliso Wetland Park, home to a large population of hippos.

According to a Facebook post by the OK Express grocery store at the Engen station, the hippo returned back to Lake St Lucia “after grazing around town.”

Stubbe told Storyful it was common for hippos to come out of the lake after sunset, and sometimes during the day, to graze. Credit: Marié Stubbe via Storyful
