Helicopter Fights Bushfire on Moreton Island as Campers Told to 'Leave Now'

Firefighters battled an out of control blaze at Bulwer, on Moreton Island, Queensland, on November 19, after campers on the island were ordered to evacuate.

The blaze was “slow-moving” but “dangerous”, and was threatening communities in Bulwer, Cowan and Tangalooma, the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) said in an alert.

“Follow your bushfire survival plan now. If you do not have a plan, your safest option is to leave now if it is clear to do so. If you are not in the area, do not return, as conditions are too dangerous,” authorities warned campers on the island.

“There is the potential for this fire to move unpredictably and it may impact campsites right across Moreton Island in the coming hours and days. The situation is expected to remain unsafe for a number of days.”
