Haftar Closes in on Tripoli With Capture of Base on Southern Outskirts

Forces loyal to Libya’s General Khalifa Haftar closed in on the capital Tripoli on December 12, with a company claiming the capture of Hamza camp on the city’s southern outskirts.

An account associated with the Benghazi Fighter Company — part of Haftar’s Libyan National Army — posted footage on December 12 that appeared to be taken at Hamza camp. A building with the number “301” written on the site was also seen in a separate post on Facebook.

Haftar began an offensive earlier this year to capture Tripoli, but his forces have yet to capture the Libyan capital. However, on December 12, the general announced a “final battle” for the Mediterranean city. The base seen in this video is only around seven miles south of central Tripoli. Haftar has ignored European leaders who are calling for an end to fighting. Credit: Benghazi Fighter Company via Storyful
