German Firefighter Thanks Dortmund Residents With Gravity-Defying Trumpet Serenade

A German firefighter thanked the coronavirus-quieted city of Dortmund by playing Beethoven’s Ode to Joy on the trumpet from a cherry-picker high in the air.

Aerial video shared by the Dortmund fire department on April 1 shows firefighter Lisa Kroschwald performing over the city, located in Germany’s Rhine-Westphalia region. The department said on Facebook that the song was meant to thank Dortmund residents for adhering to social distancing measures that allow essential workers, such as law enforcement and medics, to do their jobs safely.

Dortmund police issued social distancing guidance for North Rhine-Westphalia, including banning gatherings of more than two people in public spaces and shuttering restaurants and bars except for takeout or delivery.

There have been at least 67,366 reported COVID-19 cases in Germany, leading to 732 deaths, as of April 1, according to the World Health Organization. At least 304 cases were reported in Dortmund as of March 31, city officials said. Credit: Firefighters Dortmund via Storyful
