Freediver Hangs Out With Squad of Luminous Squid

Ever hung out with a squad of squid? Freediver Jules Casey did so recently, when she came across a group of bioluminescent squid on a dive in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria.

Casey captured this video of the creatures, which appear to be luminous bay squid, a known species in Port Phillip Bay.

According to the Australian Museum, a luminous bay squid produces light by obtaining luminescent bacteria from the water. That light then serves to obscure the squid’s silhouette, making it less visible to predators from below. Credit: onebreathdiver via Storyful
