Fierce Winds Blow Rain Sideways as Storm Smashes Sydney

A fierce lightning storm lashed Sydney on February 18, leaving one man dead and damaging power lines across the city.

The severe storm saw a gust of over 100 km/h recorded in the city’s west, while heavy rainfall and hail were also observed.

NSW Police said a 37-year-old man received severe injuries after a gas bottle became airborne at The Rocks in Sydney’s Central Business District. The man later died after being rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital.

Around 80,000 people in Sydney lost power during the storm, according to Ausgrid, as trees were brought down on power lines and properties. Credit: ployzxoxo via Storyful
