New Energy-Efficient Lighting System Enhances Look of the Acropolis

A new LED lighting system meticulously designed to highlight the details of the Parthenon and other monuments of the Acropolis debuted on Wednesday night, according to footage posted on September 30 by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

According to reports, the new system reduces light pollution, consumes less energy, and uses a variety of colors and intensities to “showcase Greece’s sacred hill, the Acropolis, and the Parthenon.”

Eleftheria Deko, who designed the lighting for the 2004 Athens Olympic ceremonies, created the system.

Mitsotakis called the Acropolis a “symbol of democracy” and an “eternal compass” when unveiling the lighting.

“A monument that has shone its light on all of humanity for centuries. Today, we unveiled its new lighting system and saw it bathed in the light of the 21st century,” Mitsotakis said. Credit: Kyriakos Mitsotakis via Storyful
