Elderly Couple Missing for a Week Airlifted to Safety in 'Miracle Rescue'

A Palo Alto couple in their 70s, missing for more than a week after they got lost on a St Valentine’s Day hike, were airlifted to safety on February 22 by a helicopter from the Sonoma County Sheriff’s office.

Hundreds of people helped search for the couple. After the pair were found by volunteers authorities called in helicopter support.

KTVU news said a local sheriff described their rescue as a “miracle.”

The couple, Carol Kiparsky and Ian Irwin, were taken to hospital for treatment, authorities said.

“Carol and Ian are in amazing spirits and have expressed their gratitude to everyone for the well wishes during their recovery,” the couple’s family wrote in a statement. Credit: Marin County Sheriff via Storyful
