Disused Coal-Fired Power Station Demolished in Victoria's Latrobe Valley

Energy giant Engie demolished the eight 137-metre-tall chimneys of a decommissioned brown coal-fired power station in the Latrobe Valley region of Victoria, Australia, on May 25.

The Hazelwood power station was closed in March 2017 after over 50 years of operation.

“I’ve lived here since I was five, it’s an icon and now it’s gone, can’t understand why the government didn’t buy it back and keep locals in jobs,” Craig Dekaste, who filmed this video, told Storyful.

Much of the demolition work required the removal of asbestos that was used to build the power station, according to Engie. Credit: Craig Dekaste via Storyful
