Crew Continues to Fight Blaze Aboard USS Bonhomme Richard in San Diego

The fire-ravaged USS Bonhomme Richard continued to smolder three days after the conflagration was first reported, with crews still battling the fire at Naval Base San Diego in California on Wednesday, July 15.

The fire was first reported at 11.30 am on Sunday, the US Navy said. According to an update from the Navy, 40 sailors and 23 civilians were treated for minor injuries.

There have been more than 1,500 helicopter water bucket drops to cool down the ship, which will allow firefighters to get onboard and extinguish the blaze from the inside, the Navy said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
