Out-of-Control Fire Forces Closure of Canberra Airport

An out-of-control fire burning at Pialligo, on Canberra’s outskirts, forced the closure of Canberra Airport on January 23. A ‘watch and act’ warning was issued for the blaze with residents told to prepare for a possible evacuation.

“The fire is out of control and firefighters are on scene conducting property protection. Under current weather conditions, the fire is difficult to control,” ACT authorities said.

Canberra Airport was closed, however stranded travellers had not been evacuated, according to the airport.
