British Yachtswoman Susie Goodall Reaches Chile After Rescue

A British yachtswoman whose boat was damaged during a severe storm in the Pacific Ocean while participating in the Golden Globe Race arrived back on dry land on December 14, following a rescue mission organised by the Chilean Navy.

Susie Goodall was in fourth place in the race when a storm caused her to lose her mast.

A distress signal from her yacht was first picked up by the coastguard in her hometown of Falmouth, Cornwall. They then alerted the Chilean maritime search and rescue authorities responsible for that part of the Pacific.

The Chilean Navy issued an alert to ships in the area. The Hong Kong-registered cargo ship MV Tian Fu was closest to the yacht and made the rescue.

This video from the Chilean Navy shows officers boarding the MV Tian Fu to meet Goodall at Punta Arenas, in Chile, and to thank the ship’s captain and his crew for their efforts. Goodall was later reunited with members of her family.

She tweeted on December 7 that she was “on the ship,” after an intense 50-hour rescue mission. Credit: Armada de Chile via Storyful
