Black Ash From Distant Bushfires Washes Up on Sydney Beaches
Ash and burnt leaves from bushfires more than 100 kilometres away washed up on Sydney beaches on December 10.
The blackened debris was seen in waterways on a day where hazardous smoke from bushfires enveloped the city and left many landmarks barely visible.
In this video, filmed at Balmoral Beach in the city’s north, ash and burned leaves are visible floating in the water and washed up on the sand.
New South Wales health authorities urged residents affected by the smoke to stay indoors and avoid outdoor physical activity. Smoke continued to affect air quality in Sydney and eastern New South Wales on December 11.
Over 2.7 million hectares have been burnt by bushfires this season, according to the New South Wales Rural Fire Service. The largest fire, the Gospers Mountain Blaze to Sydney’s northwest, had burned through more than 320,000 of bushland by Wednesday afternoon. Credit: Haig Gilchrist via Storyful
