Atlanta Aquarium Shares Footage of Beluga Whale Calf's First Moments After Birth

Staff at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta announced on Monday, May 25, that a beluga whale calf had been born in the aquarium on Sunday, May 17.

The 174-pound calf was born to mother Whisper after a “long labor” and is five feet, four inches in length.

“We are so proud of Whisper and overjoyed to welcome her calf to our Georgia Aquarium family,” said Dennis Christen, senior director of zoological operations, mammals, and birds at Georgia Aquarium.

“We will be there right alongside the calf as it continues to grow and learn from Whisper," Christen said.

The zoo said both Whisper and the calf are getting “much-needed rest” and are monitored around-the-clock by animal care and health teams. Credit: Georgia Aquarium via Storyful
