Algerians Protest For the Fifth Friday in a Row Against President Extending Fourth Term

Protesters in Algeria rallied on March 22 for the fifth Friday in a row against President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s decision to extend his fourth term, local media reported.

Despite the rain, millions protested across the nation. This footage shows protesters gathered outside, waving flags and reciting chants.

On March 19, the deputy prime minister of Algeria, Ramtane Lamamra, said Bouteflika was ready for an open and transparent transition of power when the next president was elected, state media reported.

Bouteflika previously announced on March 11 that Algeria’s elections, which were due to take place in April, would be postponed. Bouteflika has been in office since 1999 and recently turned 82. Credit: leilalou390 via Storyful
