Video: Seven-time NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson on his preparations for his IndyCar debut

The era of Jimmie Johnson as an official IndyCar driver is fast approaching.

The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion is set to make his IndyCar Series debut on Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park (3 p.m. ET, NBC). Johnson, 45, made the part-time move to IndyCar after he retired from NASCAR at the end of the 2020 season.

Johnson is driving for Chip Ganassi Racing at all road and street courses over the next two seasons. He'll be teammates with six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon. Together, Johnson and Dixon have 13 major North American racing titles and are the most successful pair of teammates in modern auto racing history.

Johnson joined Yahoo Sports ahead of his first race to discuss how he's gotten ready to race an IndyCar, what he's learned from Dixon and how he'll define success during the 2021 season.

"From a growth standpoint, I've come very far in the environments I've been able to simulate in a test session with a single car," Johnson said. "But there's still so much more to a race weekend that I haven't experienced and rolling into Barber I get to try it all for the first time."
