SEPANG, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s gold medal hope Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy is particularly excited about the 2019 Philippines SEA Games as it is an opportunity to redeem himself in the sailing event.
The 2018 Asian Games silver medallist in laser standard will be up against Singapore’s Ryan Lo Jun Han, the defending champion.
Khairulnizam, 28, said beating his arch-rival Ryan to the gold medal would certainly make up for his disappointment in the last games in Kuala Lumpur in 2017.
Ryan won gold at KL2017 while Khairulnizam only managed a bronze, partly because he was carrying an injury then.
“I’m on a mission of revenge in this edition of the SEA Games. It will be an interesting duel and I expect tough competition,” he told reporters at a ceremony to hand over the national flag to the sailing squad here today.

At the event at KLIA2, preliminary incentives totalling RM14,000 were given to athletes and coaches of the sailing team by the Malaysian Sailing Association (MSA).
Khairulnizam said the sailing squad had benefited from their three-week stint at Subic in the Philippines.
“Our preparations gave us input on the venue and sea conditions there. Most athletes have gained some insights so it is an advantage for us.
“I can only hope that the same conditions would prevail during competition,” he said.
At KL2017, Malaysia emerged overall champions in sailing with six gold, four silver and four bronze medals while Thailand and Singapore won four golds each to finish second and third respectively.
MSA today also announced incentives of RM5,000 for a gold, RM3,000 for a silver and RM1,500 for a bronze.
