Venetians Protest City's 'Tourism Monoculture'

Demonstrators formed a human chain on June 13 along the Zattere waterfront promenade in Venice, Italy, to protest mass tourism, local media reported.

The event, called “Venezia Fu-Turistica,” was organized by a coalition of mostly environmental groups, according to its Facebook page, and called for the city “to be reborn in a different way” following the coronavirus lockdown.

Among residents’ demands were the end of “tourist monoculture,” an increase in the number of residents, the limiting of rental accommodations to tourists, and for the city to focus on “climate justice.” Credit: Unite per la Pace/ Elisabetta Masato via Storyful
